چکیده

A workflow specification is a formal description of business processes in the real world. Its correctness is critical to the workflow execution and hence the realisation of business objectives. In addition to structural and temporal constraints, resource constraints are also implied in workflow specifications. Therefore, they should be analysed to ensure that the workflow specification is resource consistent at build-time. In this paper, we first identify the problem of resource constraints in a workflow specification. Then we propose an innovative approach with corresponding algorithms to the checking of resource consistency for a workflow specification. Furthermore, we extend our analysis work to timed workflow specifications, where time information is taken into consideration for the checking of the resource consistency of a workflow specification. The work reported in this paper provides a theoretical foundation for workflow modeling and analysis in workflow management. 2003 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Implementing Distributed Workflow Systems from XML Specifications

In enterprise-wide distributed workflow, multiple users cooperate towards some common goal following predefined task specifications. This paper presents an approach for constructing a distributed workflow system starting from its XML specification in terms of various participants’ roles, access rights based on roles, shared objects, operations, and workflow constraints. The specifications are i...

A Workflow Instance-based Model-checking Approach to Analysing Organisational Controls in a Loan Origination Process1

Demonstrating the safety of a system (ie. avoiding the undesired propagation of access rights or indirect access through some other granted resource) is one of the goals of access control research, e.g. [1-4]. However, the flexibility required from enterprise resource management (ERP) systems may require the implementation of seemingly contradictory requirements (e.g. tight access control but a...

A Clustering Approach to Scientific Workflow Scheduling on the Cloud with Deadline and Cost Constraints

One of the main features of High Throughput Computing systems is the availability of high power processing resources. Cloud Computing systems can offer these features through concepts like Pay-Per-Use and Quality of Service (QoS) over the Internet. Many applications in Cloud computing are represented by workflows. Quality of Service is one of the most important challenges in the context of sche...

Web service workflow selection using system and network QoS constraints

Web services serve as a leading technology platform for web-based data-centric environments providing flexibility of loose coupling, message-based communication. Interest in more efficient web services selection strategies is rather requisite especially from the business process workflow perspective. We present several strategies to efficiently select a set of web services performing a workflow...

Human resource constraints driven virtual workflow specification

A virtual workflow specification is a formal description of business process in the real world and whose execution is done in a virtual organisation. Workflows are activities that involve the coordinated execution of multy tasks performed by different processing entities. Among the processing entities are human resources. These latter belong to an organisation or in a virtual organisation and a...
